Michael Handler is the Chief Communications Officer at Awana. Through engaging storytelling, collaboration, and design thinking, he helps leaders understand the culture and creatively solve problems.
Michael has a diverse background in ministry, graphic design and business. He graduated Sum Cum Lade with a BA in Ministerial Studies and a minor in Youth Ministry. Before joining Awana in 2011, he ran a design and marketing firm that served denominations, non-profits, and universities. He also consulted over 15 startups and church plants.
Drawing on his 18 years of experience coaching pastors, leaders, artists, and entrepreneurs, Michael speaks and writes on a variety of topics, including leadership, communications, vision, biblical truths, creativity and storytelling.
In 2014, he co-created the global documentary, MORE, which shows stories of God at work around the world through the Awana ministry. Currently, he is producing and providing creative direction on a feature-length documentary about the importance of discipleship and the future of the church in North America.
Michael enjoys trying new restaurants and tackling DIY projects. He and his wife, Erin, have one son and three younger daughters. Together, they love cheering on the Cubs, Bears and spending way too much time at Disney.
